The
Cerdanya is a Catalan region defined by its particular geographic,
climatic and historic characteristics. Principally containing the high
valley of the River Segre, its orientation is east-west. It is one of
the widest alpine valleys in Europe with more then three thousand sun
hours. Its position between the range of the Pyrenees and the mountains
of the Cadí and Moixeró determines its climate, partly Mediterranean and
Atlantic.
The Flora and fauna of the Cerdanya, varied and abundant, has always
been of great interest and due to this, reserves of hunting and fishing
and the Natural Park of Cadí-Moixeró were created.
Its first known inhabitants lived in the Neolithic period (4000 BC). The
Romans called them the “Ceretans”. In the seventh Century the “Country”
of la Cerdanya became a part of the “Spanish March”. Along with others
it formed part of Catalunya. Puigcerdà, the valley’s new capital in the
twelfth century, reflects the demographic and economic boom that lasted
two centuries. Its strategic location was the motive for continuing
confrontations between France and Spain (fifteenth – nineteenth
centuries) even though the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed in 1659,
which divided the region between the Spanish provinces of Lleida and
Girona in 1833.
The art of the Cerdanya, for the most part religious, is emphasized by
the great abundance of Romanesque monuments found in many of the towns
in the region. Also examples of the Gothic and Baroque can be admired.
The valley is well connected to the important centres of Catalunya by
the Tunnel of the Cadí and with Perpignan, Toulouse and Lleida by good
national and international roads. It has become an outstanding centre
for leisure and holiday-making, with exceptional hotel and sport
facilities (ski stations for Downhill and Cross-country, golf courses
and riding clubs, mountain shelters, sports centres…).
